Some of the 50's GM cars had automatic transmissions on the column with this sequence: P D N R. It is really easy to forget when you are backing one up.

ETA: This is what I used to teach my sons to use a stick - poorly synchronized, top speed of 45 or so. If you drive this stick you'll be ok with any other stick.

Noteworthy is that about 82% of the cars were ordered with manual transmissions in 1968. In '79, less than 20% of the cars were delivered with manual gearboxes

I wonder if it's on of those things you never forget like riding a bike?

Conceptually it's not that difficult. It may take a minute or two to get back in the swing of things, but once you understand the basic functions of a manual transmission, you can get from point A to point B.

Sometimes you may forget to downshift at a complete stop.

Not surprising - they don't make the cars that way anymore. As much fun as it is, can't imagine it is considered terribly necessary.

Stick shifts also SUCK in Baton Rouge traffic.

Hated mine when I got stuck in Atlanta traffic.

Loved it in rural Georgia though.

i have been driving since 1981. i've owned sticks several times.

you don't forget how, but each clutch is different and it will take you a couple of hours at least to get truly comfortable with a new stick IMO.

My dad taught me on his sports car when I was like 15 and I stalled it a couple times and that was the end of that

I can do it, just not well. Driven a few jeeps around and been ok.

Honestly, I think its pointless. I have always had automatics and will always have automatics.

I bet there was a time when people were saying "How terrible that fathers aren't teaching their sons how to ride a horse!"

If the percentile in the OP is true then half the posters in this thread are full of shite.
