Press conference: https://twitter.com/WCBINEWS/status/1566109374082424832
- Cory Patterson is a lineman at Tupelo airport, employee of Tupelo Aviation for 10 years. Police Chief said this means he fuels the aircraft
- That aircraft was fully fueled the night before
- He had some flight instruction, not believed at this time to be a licensed pilot
- 5:08am: He stole the aircraft and took off
- No one was in the control tower at time of takeoff. ATC didn't open until 6am
- ~5:23am: He calls 911 to tell them he's going to crash into a Walmart
- Negotiators convinced him to not crash into a Walmart and instead to land the aircraft at Tupelo airport. He did not have experience to land the aircraft. A private pilot assisted in helping authorities with the landing but it was not completed. He aborted the landing about 100 feet off the runway before pulling up and traveling northwest
- ~9:32am: He posted a FB goodbye message
- 10:08am: FAA lost radar contact with aircraft
- 10:12am: Negotiators reestablished contact. He confirmed landing in a field
- No injuries
- He had contact with family at some point during the incident
- Charges: Grand larceny, making terroristic threats. Federal charges anticipated also
- Believed to have been taken into custody without incident

This meets the "perfect OT thread progression" standards.
When he's in the air, threatening to take out people on the ground:
"Shoot that scum down."
When he lands the plane:
"I can't wait to see the TV drama or read his book, he's the next Scully."
When they find out he's a progressive:
"They should have shot him down. Judge needs to hammer him."

How do you know for sure that's him?
Cory Patterson is a pretty common name.

Judging by his fb pics, he's probably FBO personnel. They do have access to the aircraft incase of emergency or needing to move aircraft around. It's normal. Dude prob had the key and just said frick it
He was FBO. I don't know much about the guy but my old roommate used to work with him.

Technically false.
The FBO is a contracted company.

He must hate the self checkout too.

So he worked for somebody at the airport going to a plane, and puttin' gas in it. Ummm Hmmmm.
I found out where he was going.

ETA: Thanks for voting for $5 gas, DVQ's. I hope it hurts when you get the monkey...

Nope, its correct. He's an employee AT the airport.
He didn't say OF the airport.

Aside from the fact that his Facebook is littered with My Little Pony, this Twitter handle is My Little Pony, and he follows/is followed by Northern Mississippi folks?
A pic of him flying posted on the Twitter cements it.
It's an awful lot of coincidences, surely.

Yeah I had found him on FB(his page was taken down) and had a couple mutuals. I could confirm who he was via my old roommate. But I don't have twitter so it only lets me scroll so far before blocking me.
Couldn't find anything confirming the twitter account to be the same person before that....which is why I asked.

Press conference said he didn't know how to land a plane. They had him talked into landing at the Tupelo airport with a trained pilot talking him thru how to land. He aborted the airport landing. Headed north west and updated his facebook in flight with his goodbye message.

TPD used to have a narc outpost on grounds in one of the abandoned buildings and the airport owns the property that the farm/zoo sits on across the street. It's an incredibly idiotic point to try and argue.

That runway is PLENTY big enough for an amateur to land a plane that size but I'm surprised they were ok with trying to talk him through the most difficult part of flying near neighborhoods.

Then here is my issue. That plane took off an hour or so before he took it and relanded back at the same airport. How can you take off if no one is in the tower?

because it's a small airport not needing a 24/7 tower. Hell, they didn't even have a tower at all ~20 years ago.
IIRC, it defaults to the main ATC tower in Greenville if the on-site tower is offline.

You push the throttle forward and go.

He was already flying over neighborhoods. My next door neighbor said he flew over our house 4 or 5 times. We live about 1 mile southeast of the airport. The approach to the runway is nothing but fields at the Buffalo Park and the end of the runway is a field all the way to main street. The guy knew how to fly but had no experience with the landing part.
