He's probably an AMP or FBO personnel. He'd have access
But as I elaborated on in the rest of my post, even if you are granted a key or keycard for work related access, using the access privilege to gain unauthorized access is itself a form of “force.”
You can give your Buddy a key to your house to check in while you’re on vacation, but if your Buddy used the key to gain access to commit larceny, it’s still “breaking and entering,”

You're a Benton County Sheriff Deputy, one minute you're enjoying a quiet Saturday morning riding around, the next you're taking down a guy who stole a plane in a field.

I think this plane would use JP4, which is cheaper.
Hell, I’m just thinking back to the days when I got my PPL and 100LL was $1.65/gal! (Damn! I’m old.)

One of the officers said "Uh, I think we're supposed to call the FAA'

I’m pretty impressed with these airport mechanic baggage handler nerds who are able to get planes off the ground and fly them around after the last two times it’s happened. This one even landed it.
I’m curious if he had flight training. Landing successfully in a bean field like that isn’t easy

Depends on the state and what the elements of the crime in that state are.

This early into the investigation (has an investigation actually been commenced yet), what do we know about how he got control of the aircraft?
All I’ve heard is that the aircraft belonged to someone else, which would almost certainly indicate that his entry into the cockpit might not have been authorized. (Barring being in there for some legitimate purpose immediately preceding taking off with the plane.) Even if he worked at the airport and had a key for occasional access to the plane, if he was not supposed to be in there at the time, he would technically be “breaking into” the cockpit even if he used a key.
We know the plane belongs to SOUTHEAST AVIATION LLC,Doyle Land Renfroe who is a physician in Oxford
We know the kid was an employee at the airport....
The plane had been in Tupelo since August 26th.....
The kid likely had access and just straight up stole the plane.
BTW...there is no cockpit door like you are suggesting....all he had to do was open the fuselage door and climb right into the cockpit

What a gif that would be flying by in the background of Corso, Fowler, Herbstreit and the gang of a game day crowd.

You ever heard of The Barefoot Bandit? If not:
quote:
Colton Harris Moore (born March 22, 1991) is an American former fugitive. He was charged with the theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars in property, including several small aircraft, boats, and multiple cars, all committed while still a teenager.
Moore is suspected of being responsible for approximately 100 thefts in Washington, Idaho, and Canada, including bicycles, automobiles, light aircraft, and speedboats.[15] It is believed that he learned how to fly small planes by reading aircraft manuals, handbooks, watching a "How to fly a small airplane" DVD, and playing flight simulator computer games.[17] One plane he stole was a Cessna 182, FAA registration number N24658, belonging to then KZOK-FM radio personality Bob Rivers, valued at over $150,000.[20] The plane was later recovered from a Yakama Indian Reservation crash site. Though badly damaged, it was rebuilt and is in Florida.[21]
