A lot of people replace a belief in God (or some other belief that can serve as a guiding principle) with something else. And in times of distress, they are vulnerable to being manipulated. To some that's radical religious beliefs, to others, that's a radical political movement.
I'm not saying that's what happened here, but that's a damn common story among a lot of radical political outreach groups - many of which are targeting LGBT youth right now.
