My truck was parked when a lady ran into it and damaged it.
The police came out but no report was made since it was on private property and the lady and I exchanged ins, contact numbers, etc...

She's not sure if she wants to file it on her ins. because she claims her deductible is so high.
I tell her I will go get 2 estimates and she can decide if she wants to pay it out of pocket or file.
I go get estimates, which both turn out to be about the same. one is $835, the other $810.
She FLIPS out when I tell her the amount of the quotes. Cant understand why they're so high.

Decides to file it on her ins. Now State Farm is telling me the 2 quotes are useless because neither body shop is affiliated with State Farm.
They said before they will pay for damages, their estimator will have to look at it first.

What are the chances this guy is going to come out and try to screw me over by giving me a lowball quote and suggest I take it to "Joe Schmo" body shop to have it repaired?

That's steering and illegal. You have the right to have it repaired where you choose.

I thought so too. I'm not sure what they're trying to pull.
In the meantime, I've been unable to drive my truck for almost 3 weeks!

State Farm, Geiko, Allstate, etc all have their "preferred shops" but they can't legally make you use them.

Aks DLauw more about it if he gets on. He owns a big body shop.

I only know a little about it because I have heard my uncles bitching about State Farm doing exactly this. My family owns a few body shops and they are constantly griping to the insurance commissioner over this sort of stuff.

My uncle even had a State Farm person try to tell him not to take his truck to his own shop because he's not a preferred shop. He recorded it and everything and raised hell about it but nothing came of it because politics.

Perfectly acceptable.

That's normal for most insurance especially the big ones. They want their estimate done in house.

You choose the body shop for the repairs.

Then if the body shop finds additional damage above the original estimate a supplement is issued and they will honor it, if legit.

State that if they refuse to cover the damages with a reputable body shop of your choosing you will be filing a complaint with the Department of Insurance.

They will toe the line mighty fast.

I worked for State Farm....this is BS. Your truck, you can choose where and if you want to get it fixed. HER insurance co has NO say in where you get repairs

First of all in Louisiana you get the right to take it to any body shop u want. Second of all it is just an estimate. If it costs more then the estimate the insurance company will issue a supliment

Don't worry. Most of the time the body shops know the appraisers and know how to work things out

What kind of $800 damage keeps you from driving it for three weeks?

Wrong. They are only talking about the estimates. They want their estimator to do it, not the body shop.

Also if you can't drive it, rent a car and give State Farm the bill.

She hit it right on rear passenger side taillight. Busted out the whole assembly (not just a broken bulb fix)

See my first post above. Just get the State Farm estimate, then choose the body shop.

State Farm has their own adjusters and they can go to any shop and do an estimate but to tell the guy that his estimates from others shops aren't legit because he didn't go to a State Farm preferred shop is 100% steering.

They do it as indirectly as possible not to get in trouble but what do you think starts going through someone's mind when they hear someone isn't a preferred shop? This thread is a prime example of the confusion it causes people and by doing that it's easy to say that a lot of people get steered away from shops by State Farm.

Not sure how else to define it.

My girl has had her car hit a lot since she got it. She's dealt with just about every insurance company and has State Farm.

If State Farm is your insurance company, they will go out of their way to accommodate you and make sure you are satisfied with the repairs.

ETA: After reading through this thread I'm seeing a lot of negativity. Is SF your insurance company or the at-fault driver's?

So basically, they need to quit dicking around and pay for whichever of the 2 shops that I want to bring it to?

They will still have their adjuster come out and write it up and then him and the body shop will argue over it until they meet in the middle or something. After that, if needed, the body shop will write up a supplement for any additional damage they might find when they tear it down and SF will approve it if it's justified.

Taurus knows what he's talking about. Take it where you want. SF will write the estimate if it's not a shop that can write their own estimate for SF. Shop works from SF estimate and requests a supplement if additional damage is found.

Easy as that.

BTW, her high deductible has nothing to do with your liability claim.

They should also pay for a rental while all of this is going down.
