Is it as simple as matching it (stain) up, sanding with the grain, laying new stain and a poly coat over it?

About to head out to match stain regardless but does anyone here have any experience or information they'd like to share? I want to knock this out sometime the next few weeks and I feel like this is something I should or may be able to do on my own.

in the past I have just sanded my posts enough to get the old stain off and get a little rough finish so the new stain adheres to the post. I have always used a neutral stain, but I have noticed more and more of a darker stain. I might try a little darker.

Thanks for the advice. I've got a Cypress Beam in the back on a corner of my patio, with another one on my front porch in the corner with some detail cypress running back towards the house from either angle.

Shouldn't be too much work (I know...I know...Famous last words) but I want to make sure I don't jack this up as I'm not some master carpenter or skilled trade who does it for a living.

I figure a decent hand-held sander, some drop cloth, some brushes and a stain applicator should cover it.

Palm/orbital sander with 80 grit paper and them 120 grit handsand... Stain. Wait a couple hours then handsand lightly with steel wool, coat of polyurethane via brush. You're welcome.

you will need rags and a fine grain sanding sponge for sanding the urethane between coats

ETA: rags are for wiping off excess stain once you put it on

Use an oil based stain and top coat it with a spar varnish not a polyurethane.

Do not use poly. Use spar. Read before you buy. Poly is not UV protective and will flake over time. Spar is for outside. It will leave your wood a little darker.

Get a random orbital sander. Hit it with 80 grit down 120 then 220. Then stain it.

Don't use any crap you can get from Home Depot.

Get some TWP 100.

My apologies for not completely understanding you here. But you're saying that I should start off with an orbital sander with 80 grit to start, Then come back over that with 120. Then come back over that with 220? Then stain...and then seal...right?

Sand 80/100/120 then stain it do not put any poly on it you will only create more work spar etc does not matter all top coats will crack & peal there are finishes that will work but you don't have access to that

Correct. You probably don't have to go down to 220 for a structural beam, 120 would be fine.
