So, I have to say.. the only "mountain" in New Orleans I can think of is Monkey Hill.

Per Disney:
Today we are thrilled to share a first glimpse of a project Imagineers have been working on since last year. Splash Mountain – at both Disneyland park in California and Magic Kingdom park in Florida – will soon be completely reimagined. The theme is inspired by an all-time favorite animated Disney film, “The Princess and the Frog.” We pick up this story after the final kiss, and join Princess Tiana and Louis on a musical adventure – featuring some of the powerful music from the film – as they prepare for their first-ever Mardi Gras performance.
Tiana is a modern, courageous, and empowered woman, who pursues her dreams and never loses sight of what’s really important. It’s a great story with a strong lead character, set against the backdrop of New Orleans and the Louisiana bayou. In 1966, Walt himself opened New Orleans Square when it became the first new “land” added to Disneyland park, so it feels natural to link the story and the incredible music of “The Princess and the Frog” to our parks.
The voice of Princess Tiana and Tony Award-winning actress, Anika Noni Rose, shared, “It is really exciting to know that Princess Tiana’s presence in both Disneyland and Magic Kingdom will finally be fully realized! As passionate as I am about what we created, I know the fans are going to be over the moon. The Imagineers are giving us ‘The Princess and the Frog’ Mardi Gras celebration we’ve been waiting for, and I’m here for it!”
The approach to retheming or “plussing” attractions (as Walt Disney referred to it) begins with Imagineers asking the question, how can we build upon or elevate the experience and tell a fresh, relevant story? It’s a continuous process that Imagineers are deeply passionate about. And with this longstanding history of updating attractions and adding new magic, the retheming of Splash Mountain is of particular importance today. The new concept is inclusive – one that all of our guests can connect with and be inspired by, and it speaks to the diversity of the millions of people who visit our parks each year.

It’s almost as though some of you don’t spend all day hanging out here

Of all the gripes that i've seen on facebook, this one bothers me the least by far. It is a movie in the library and it will produce money for a park that has had a rough year. This only makes business sense.

You think there will be a large increase in attendance solely because of a revamped ride?

Hey look over here! We’re not racist and to prove it were gonna intentionally go out of our way to replace a white cartoon theme with a black cartoon theme to help ease racial tensions. We are so much more progressive than others and this feels good. This feels really good!

Is the current splash mountain really a “white cartoon theme”?

Do I think people will go to see a newly revamped ride? Yes. There are people who are obsessed with Disney. I live about 30 minutes from Georgia and Florida and I have people who live near me with annual passes and it is 8 or 10 hours away.

Maybe not but they’re associating it with racism against blacks and from what I understand there’s some validity to that BUT intentionally replacing it with a black cartoon theme because it’s a black cartoon theme is the opposite of removing racial undertones from their parks. Everyone knows why they’re doing that.

This has been in the works for over a year.
Disney blog on retheming of Splash Mountain
They're retheming it to make it relevant to today's kids/families like they have with a ton of other rides over time like Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, almost the entirety of Tommorowland, Snow White, etc.
People outside of the South probably haven't watched Song of the South in decades.

Imagine a life that spends time looking for “racial inequality” in cartoon characters. What a miserable existence that must be. I’ve been to splash mountain many, many times and, call me insensitive, but I was either enjoying time with whom I was there with or enjoying the ride itself - never did I have feel the need to question if it was a tool of whitey to oppress minorities.

Not at all. I also believe the only human character in Song of the South is Uncle Remus.

Just FYI, this has been in the works for over a year. This isn’t a response to BLM.
Disney updates rides all the time to make them more relevant to today’s kids.

Next they need to revamp the Rock n Roller Coaster. I mean is Aerosmith really relevant anymore?

Attendance, no. But IP’s on theme rides bring additional opportunists for merchandise sales and continuing to expand the movie portfolio. It’s not just about increasing park attendance. Since parks and products/merchandising now full under the same financial umbrella for Disney, the influx of IPs into the theme parks has kind of exploded. Tron, Guardians, Toy Story, etc.
