I have an ‘06 4Runner Sport 4WD V6, have 230K miles and it’s been trouble free. Do all my own maintenance and it’s a rock solid ride. Would drive to California tomorrow.

The paint is peeling on 2 doors and hood (all cosmetic), it also needs new carpet (stained). I got a $4K estimate to repaint, that’s also the same dollar amount CarMax offered on a trade-in.

New 4Runner is $40K....don’t want a car note but having tough time investing $ in a vehicle not valued much more than what I’m putting into it. Risky if it got totaled out.

So invest or divest?

I'd have a hard time putting $4k into a vehicle that's only worth about that.

Maybe get some more estimates on the painting? That seems a little high, but it's also not something I've ever researched.

Just go cheap and Fact-O-Bake. Did that to my 95 mustang back in 2012 and it's been fine. But i also rarely drive it.

I'd paint it but not for 4K. Keep looking you'll find cheaper

But that $4K paint job might raise the trade-in value $500.

I wouldn't put tree fiddy into cosmetic issues on an old car that runs great, is paid off, and is relatively cheap to insure.

In 2010, I bought a 1997 Land Cruiser that I later found had a Maaco paint job. Paint is still holding up. It ain't perfect, but it's there.

Earle Sheib $300.00 paint job. You can't polish a turd. If its a cheap reliable car, then drive it.

This. You can do it yourself and if you don't like it. Just peel it off.

I feel you. my 02 escalade is peeling as well but only on the front, mostly hood area. I got a quote for just painting the front for 1k from a guy on craigslist

got the idea from my sister who got her old (classic) car painted by a guy she found on craigslist for less than 1k

anyways maybe try craigslist is my point

If you're driving that old of a car, why are you worried about cosmetic issues

It's not a show car.
