For some reason God had gotten a bad rep, maybe it's the turn or burn preaching. Why wouldn't we look at God as a merciful God since He sent His son to die for our sins? Obviously it seems if he errs, it's on the side of mercy, not judgement.

Yes we are sinners because of choices we make, we are not forced to sin. In every sin there was a point before that sin where a choice was made.
