Yeah, that's the beginning of all wisdom, but it doesn't really explain why it's good and what the reward for it is.
I think too many people answer these kinds of existential questions about life by saying "live to help others", "live for God", or "live entirely for my children", which is circular logic in a way since it avoids answering the question about what is good about life in the first place. I mean, all of these things are good in a way, but it's a bunch of beta bullshite for anyone to assert that the only meaning or purpose in his life is to serve someone else and try to make that person happy. On some level, we have to admit that we need to just maximize our own joy and meaning given the constraints of the universe into which we were born.
EDIT: Altruism is a false construct. It doesn't really exist.

To a Jew in that time it would be self-evident

I want to make beer for over a million people. That means I'd have to make it to the big show of master brewer.

I don't follow. Do you mean because they associated righteous living with worldly success?

Sacrifice to do something for somebody and never let anybody know. As soon as you've told someone the gesture is hollow because you were paid back in recognition.

No. To a devout Jew at that time, obedience to the Torah - God's Word - is the biggest thing a person can do in this life.

Raising a child that becomes a huge superstar in anything, be in sports, music, or non-pornographic entertainment.
