In a business setting, why do so many people try to chat with you via speakerphone? I can barely understand anything they are saying

It frees up both hands for posting on TD while they're talking to you.

They don't if the information is important/confidential.

Congrats on being an unvalued associate.

The beauty of the MUTE button. I sit on conference calls that clients request I dial in for (and bill my time) when the calls have nothing to do with my services for the client. I listen with half an ear and type away on TD. Just have to remember the MUTE button. Forgot once after chiming in that I was on the call and the guy running the call finally said loudly: "The person typing on their keyboard needs to stop. I can hear you."

I hate being put on speakerphone, unless it is absolutely necessary to include several people on the conversation. I have a few clients who constantly call for one on one calls and insist on using it. I've asked them several times, politely, not to do it but they seem to have an addiction. Now, I simply start talking whenever they do so the conversation becomes useless. They usually get annoyed enough to pick up the handset.

I used to work for a software company that had a very open environment and for whatever reason, it was commonplace for people to dial out on speaker and then pick up when someone answered. I never understood that. We also had a guy who would walk laps around the office on his wireless headset when he had calls. This same person referred to himself as an evangelist for the company. Just obnoxious.

For getting several people in one office involved in the call.

I don't mind when only one person is on with the speakerphone as long as they have decent acoustics. One time I thought I had muted my end and said something to my boss about hating when he does that. "Uh, we can still hear you."
