Basically, I am looking for some agency or company to push boundaries. Whether that means landing a man on Mars, or launching a shite ton of probes out into space(my preferred path).
But what is the financial incentive to go to Mars? Pretty much you're asking a company to light at least 40 billion dollars on fire. Sure, it will inspire the species and likely produce growth in multiple industries, but for the company that does it, it won't pay off for decades.
We need a government to do this. I don't see why people are so pissed at their tax dollar going to further the species instead of a bloated military or welfare. It is but a tiny fraction of both of those budgets. It is ridiculous people get pissed about their tax dollar going to something that gives 7 dollars back for every dollar invested in it. Anyone against funding NASA is either misinformed, corrupt, or stupid.

SpaceX was founded with the goal of reducing space transportation costs and enabling the colonization of Mars.
Per Wikipedia.
I'm not saying this is "actually" the company's goal. But seeing as cost is the largest obstacle towards further exploration it is going to be hard for NASA to get near the funding it needs to pursue the next frontier.

What we need is a government to bid out contracts to the best private aerospace companies as they can do it more efficiently than NASA.

I wouldn't mind private companies coming in and helping out the payload, but we need an American flag on the Martian surface.

I enjoy watching the Wallops Island launches from Cape Charles , Va... that last blow up was unfortunate

I really think we need to get something going on the moon first. It would be a good test run to colonization.

I agree, but we should have had that going in the fricking 80s. It's simply embarrassing we don't have a Moon Base right now. Really, if we kept it up from the 60s, the Moon Base would be a colony in the triple digits by now.

Completely agree. I just think that private companies really could help out the effort, especially in regards to technology development. Similar to how the US military has used private companies for weapons development and naval logistics.

I also agree. fricking fund NASA and have them work with the private sector. Put NDT in charge of all things space.

Took my 5 year old to Johnson space center in Houston a few weekends ago. He loved it. I bought him an Atlantis Shuttle from the gift store and I just find it sad that he was born to late to marvel at a shuttle launch like I did when I was young. It was pretty cool seeing the Orion there (it was just a reproduction for training) and a complete international space station on the floor of the big hanger they use for testing and training.
Funny story- while waiting on the tram that takes you out to the campus, my five year old passed a lady wearing a black burka- "oooo a ninja" in loud five year old voice. The wife was mortified while I was dying laughing.

Sounds like you have a fantastic kid on your hands. Raise him well.

I completely agree also, but the biggest problem is times are different. You won't see a politician put his or her neck on the line for national pride and most of their constituents on both sides of party lines don't seem to want a space program anyway. Hell, the condition of our country's infrastructure here on earth is starting to reach crisis levels and no one is doing anything about it.

Yep. Liberals because they're welfare pussies. Conservatives because they're war mongers. Either way, they're both mortgaging our future and don't give a frick about anything more than getting their constituency's vote.

Glad your son had a good time. I took my cousins to cape canaveral and they complained the whole time we were there. They ran through the whole place and were ready to leave the moment we got there. I've never been so disappointed in a generation.
I guess your son gives me hope because I didn't have any after hanging out with my younger cousins.
They seriously have a sick obsession with the internet, these kids are worse than zombies!
Oh yeah and I met an Astronaut who they didn't give two shits about! Mr Don Thomas

can't wait 'til the Webb telescope is operational. Supposed to be mind blowing.
