Southwest Airlines Cancellation Policy/Changing to cheaper flight

I need to book some flights on SWA for a trip next spring. If i book now and the rates go down for some reason, can i cancel and re-book at the lower rate? I can't find that they charge a fee to change, only that you have to use the funds within 12 months. So if it's cheaper, I could theoretically re-book at the cheaper rate then have extra funds available for future flights.

Absolutely. I have about $100 in unused fares that I'll have to use by June I think

If you use points they are added back to your account and you don't expire like $$ credits.
