Trivia: In Shakespearian times a gentleman walking with a lady always walked to her inside so she wouldn't get splashed with shite thrown from houses. If two men were walking, the alpha walked on the outside and the beta walked on the inside. The insult "Go to the wall!" in Romeo and Juliet refers to this.

Actually I will one up you....“[I]t used to be that a man escorting a woman on the street walked on the inside so that if waste were thrown out a window it would hit him and not her.
