This economic downturn was imposed by our government via mandatory shut down, so I'm okay with extending the increased benfits....just not an extra $600/week. Cut that in half and step it down to encourage people to return to work.

Put the difference into helping out the airlines, restaurants, and other impacted businesses.

I’d expect this to continue through the summer as stuff opens up. Some jobs won’t come back but most will

Unfortunately, most projections i've seen anticipate unemployment to stabilize at 10+%.

It's probably next to impossible to properly predict unemployment. The economic impact has been very lopsided so far, with service jobs being hit the hardest.

The ripples haven't really hit the higher skilled parts of the economy until very recently.

We need these people to get their arse back to work instead of spending government handouts.

There is talk of a "return to work bonus" and a payroll tax holiday.

Unfortunately, some in Washington thinks that it helps their political chances if unemployment remains high. So there will be resistance to anything that will grow the economy.

Airlines in particular will have a very long year ahead of them IMO.

That's a massive improvement over the projections.

Perhaps the rebound from the mandatory Covid-19 shut downs is more of a V shaped bounce rather than a prolonged U shaped recovery. I'm sure there will be a lot of very educated, well informed opinions on this over the next few days.

We aren't out of the woods. A lot of companies have recently announced at least modest layoffs, including mine.

GOP is just going to spend that money on some other bullshite like MRAPs for police departments so I’m down with giving it to the folks on unemployment so they spend it and it ends up in the local economy.

That's cute and all, but it's the Democrats in congress that are actually pushing for bail outs of municipalities, transit systems, and entire states. And when they get extra cash, they usually waste it on bullshite they don't need.

Either way, these numbers are a great sign that the rebound is at least kicking off very quickly - likely impacting retail, restaurants, and entertainment first. Businesses and employees in those markets have had a terrible few months.

If the GOP is gonna cave on extending the UI money like most of us expect them to, I like the idea of stepping down the extra UI money over that period of time.

Projections were that we would LOSE 9.5 million jobs. Safe to say that didn’t work out.
