I found these footnotes on Deadspin.

Regarding the asterisks on the map:

* Penn State is technically "state-related" and not truly public, and as a result the school does not receive as much state funding as a typical public school (leading to higher tuition) and does not have to disclose as much information about its employees. You can read the details here.

** It's difficult to track down salary information for employees at Ole Miss and Mississippi State, but the highest non-coach salaries we could find top out at around $500,000. While we can't prove that nobody at these schools earns more than Dan Mullen's $2.65 million per year, we think it's very unlikely.

The economic map is saying that the major metro economic output of 15 places equals all the rest of the USAs economic output.

But all this is symbiotic. IMO it’s a flawed map. How much of Detroit’s economy is based off of the light blue areas? You think the banks in Charlotte rely on the light blur areas more than they rely on Charlotte?

Did I see the walmart map correctly? Louisiana was the first state, outside of Arkansas in which a walmart was open?

Very interesting stuff!

I really did not know that Louisiana and Mississippi were ever inhabited by wild bison. I thought these areas were heavily forested and bison required grasslands.

Isn't McDonald's the largest holder of real estate in the United States? It is incredible.
