Obscure Bird Grasshopper:
Tersa Sphinx Moth (a new sphinx for me):
I like taking photos of grasshoppers. They have so much going on, and can look entirely different depending on which life stage they're in.

Very nice! I like the grasshoppers a lot, too...and I don't have to drive 2 hours to find them
Here's one bird and various bugs from home...
Backlit red tailed hawk
Grasshoppers and katydids
:/
Miscellaneous bugs

Be on the lookout for false buttonweed, catalpa, and wild coffee as host plants. They are large caterpillars, green with the black eye spots like other large moth caterpillars, but they can be brown, kind or red, and pretty variable depending on where they are found.

Birdwatching is racist.

There's a bunch of coffeeweed at the pond, but im not seeing many caterpillars there anymore...they were around all last summer...it's odd, I've seen many striped sphinx caterpillars, but none of the moths...
I do see the walnut sphinx moths from time to time...they're really beautiful...

They are! I haven't seen one yet. I have a walnut tree, but never have seen a caterpillar or moth.

At the beginning of your submission, did you click the "radio" button that said "Color marker only"?
I could not see a federal on the photo you posted.
Regardless, the photos you attached should help them straighten it out.

Bump for birds at home...and a few other critters...
Eastern meadowlark
Eastern kingbird
Northern waterthrush
Yellow warbler
Juvenile yellow crowned night heron
Female Eastern pondhawk dragonfly cannibalizing a female blue dasher
New raccoon friends...these are bad cell phone pics through windows...first is a male I call Vincent, because he's missing part of his left ear...second is a female with a baby, Daisy and Rhubarb
The waterthrush and warbler are only here during migration...I'm hoping they know something we don't about fall, although I doubt it

A few years ago a Meadowlark nearly drove me crazy. I didn't know the call then and I kept hearing it.......over and over and over. It sounded like it was in a wooded area across the road from me. I went to investigate, but couldn't spot the source of the call. It continued for days, sometimes calling for 10-15 minutes non-stop. I couldn't figure it out using the calls on the Audubon app, and Merlin didn't do calls at that time.
After days of not being able to spot it or figure out the call, I spotted the bird when I was taking the garbage can to the end of our road. It was perched on top of a single tuft of wheat in the middle of a field......singing. I finally got a good enough look to get an ID and Audubon verified it. I was quite relieved!
ETA: Great shots! Your Eastern Pondhawks always seem to be bigger than the ones I see around me.

were you hearing the annoying chattering call or the melodic song? when they're chattering, they look like they're going to unhinge their jaws
isn't it maddening to hear a bird and not know what it is??

Mainly moths for me lately. I've put out a black light a couple of nights and gotten a few interesting ones.
Harnessed Tiger Moth:
Gray Furcula Moth:
Soybean Looper Moth (not unusual, but I kind of like the pic):
Small Prominent:
Spotted Phosphila Moth:
An immature Obsure Bird Grasshopper:
