I've never seen a system sized for anything other than tax credits
Every system I know of in LA is grid based tax credit system. All priced around 25k. The tax credits are going away for the leased systems now and the non leased credits will be gone by 2016. It's a nice model but there is no storage of the energy you produce all day. The energy company buys what you produce for 3 cents a watt but sells it back to you at 12 cents. The systems Ed is talking are nice and can reduce your bill by 50-100 bucks but they do not get you off the grid.

No they are braced and have slots to where you can take them down easily in case of a hurricane.

That's not true. You get retail credit for what you sell back or offset.
The systems I'm talking about are the systems I sell. They save at least $150 a month on average.
It's not exactly what everyone else offers.

I only have space available facing west.. How much % would I lose of this option was taken?

I know a guy who built similar brackets in St martinville. He has them where he can lay his 54 flat in about 10 minutes if needed.
Build it yourself?

Ed we will have to talk. I'll keep a look out for you on here.

West is identical to east. You lose roughly 12-15% of your annual production. It can still be an attractive payback.

If you are truly developing a product, let me try it out. I'll sign a non-disclosure form

I've looked into the idea, and if I build a new house, it will probably be seriously considered. But I don't see the 25% annual return on investment. If I put $20k into a system, and my average elctricity bill is $120, the system would have to cover 100% of my electrical needs for over 13 years to pay for itself. Where does this ROI come from?

Under your scenario, the most you could save would be 1,440 annually.
So knock that out, and it takes 3.47 years to pay off 5k. Now you earn an additional 5k every 3.5 years moving forward.
Here's the catch: do you think electric rates will be higher or lower in ten years? Your annual savings are likely to rise faster than inflation.
Edit: this is a Louisiana scenario, where you get 20k back in incentives, assuming you aren't dumb enough to lease it.

That's all assuming that this will replace 100% of my electrical needs. It will definitely not do that.

I would put it in a contract that my system will average those savings or I'll add to it until it does. I don't lie about performance and not back it up.
I have some customers saving over $250 mo thy with systems.
Those aren't 25k systems though.

How long does that take? You make it sound like it only cost 5K to get started, but in reality not everyone has 25K just laying around to spend on something and wait a year or so until the government credits you 20K back.

If you're a homeowner with credit, I'll finance tge job until you get your credits. Takes up to a year, worse case scenario.
Most all contractors offer this.

Do you install battery systems, or grid tie ins? Do all power companies allow you to tie into their power grid?
Posted on 4/8/14 at 4:03 pm to KG6
I customize systems for homeowners. I do both battery and non-battery. There are pro's and con's to both. I do my best to educate people on what is on the market, and then we'll design the perfect system for them.
Of course I recommend equipment, specific manufacturers, and that is because some are simply superior.
I don't influence people on battery or not though.
All power companies do not allow net metering. They used to, but companies are reaching or approaching the 0.5% shutdown cap.
There are however attractive options that circumvent this......inconvenience

Stupid question.. does this hurt or help your home value.
Posted on 4/8/14 at 4:10 pm to PSU2LSU
Not a stupid question at all, and a hot debate in the real estate community.
The national appraisers journal tells them to give value to the home equal to 15x the annual savings of the system.
Realtors will tell you that NOTHING raises a homes value until a similar solar system has sold with a home near your precise location.
Eye of the beholder and all
