Soft water systems

Do soft water systems legitimately lower soap scum, calcium deposits, etc? Getting one installed. I couldn't care less about tap water taste, the feel after bathing, etc.. But I'm tired of soap scum, hard water stains, etc. Also have a water heater that's making noises due to sediment that I'm having to get cleaned out (flushing myself didn't work).
Sales people tell you all these amazing things, but I'm aware they are sales people. I just like the idea of less cleaning in the shower/tub/faucets and longer life of appliances. If the other benefits are real than great. But not holding my breath.

Water softeners usually employ salt canisters. These help to draw minerals trapped in the water out. Commercially you see these used before water goes into a water heater as hot water can hold more minerals and when it cools those minerals precipitate out.
They make other products that are cheaper. Scale safe is a cartridge system

It’s a necessary thing in San Antonio. We have some of the hardest water in America.

Yes - makes your dishwasher and washing machine more efficient, reduces the stains on shower doors and faucets, and just feels better.
Doesn’t help the drinkability - you need a reverse osmosis system for that.

I hope you aren't in BR. BRWW water is very soft. You don't need a water softener.

Not in BR. North Houston. We get white stains all over out brushed bronze fixtures, showerhead, water glasses get cloudy, etc..

A lot of that is feel. Soft water never leaves that "squeaky" clean feeling. Even when you get all the soap off. Plus there's the fact that you are supposed to use significantly less soap with soft water. But in general, in can be a pain. Especially for my wife. I can see it being annoying to get shampoo out.

I moved to NE Houston from BR 20+ years ago and the 1st thing I did was put a water softener in my home as I didn't like the hard water. It broke through many years ago and now I have a water filter which works pretty well to get the shite out of the water.
