I can't think of a better way for them to protest.
All by themselves, way out in the woods, in an unoccupied building, away from the general public.
Hell, just leave them alone and they'll get bored.
Better than them clogging up the streets and inconveniencing people.

A few things to ponder...
TLDR: Know your history
quote:
The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. A well regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained to arms, is the best and most natural defense of a free country." - James Madison, I Annals of Congress 434, June 8, 1789
quote:
"What, Sir, is the use of a militia? It is to prevent the establishment of a standing army, the bane of liberty .... Whenever Governments mean to invade the rights and liberties of the people, they always attempt to destroy the militia, in order to raise an army upon their ruins." - Rep. Elbridge Gerry of Massachusetts, I Annals of Congress 750, August 17, 1789
quote:
"If the representatives of the people betray their constituents, there is then no resource left but in the exertion of that original right of self-defense which is paramount to all positive forms of government, and which against the usurpations of the national rulers, may be exerted with infinitely better prospect of success than against those of the rulers of an individual state. In a single state, if the persons intrusted with supreme power become usurpers, the different parcels, subdivisions, or districts of which it consists, having no distinct government in each, can take no regular measures for defense. The citizens must rush tumultuously to arms, without concert, without system, without resource; except in their courage and despair." - Alexander Hamilton, Federalist No. 28

Statistically, he's far more likely to suffer violence from "al-blacka".

Fixed. The govt. is playing this from all sides to garner support.
The simple fact is, the govt. wants the property, and with an unlimited war chest at the tax payers expense, they will stop at nothing to ruin these people. The original "crime" was that they refused to sell when asked nicely 30 years ago. Since then, they've been convicted terrorist, served time, re-sentenced, & reported today to serve another 4+ years for the same crime. That's why people are upset.

You have no problems with the BLM just doing what the frick they want to people when they won't bow down to the big bad gov't? The BLM wants the people's land, they people won't sell it. So they BLM has made their life a living hell for 20 years.
Isn't this about them doing things they weren't supposed to do while leasing federal land? And getting mad for getting fined for doing such activities?

The feds want the property. When the ranchers refused to sell, the feds began a string of vindictive actions with no explanation like pulling and refusing new grazing permits. Cutting off access even though the ranchers had the right of way, etc.
When lighting started a prairie fire, the ranchers lit their own fire to "head it off at the pass". It worked, but it gave the feds the opportunity to charge them... with terrorism.

When did they ever own the land?

When you continue to have your cattle on land that isn't your own, then turn guns on the folks who are trying to move your encroaching animals, you are doing "terrorist" things.

Different story, chief. Keep up.
You're thinking of the Bundy family. They showed up to support this other family who is undergoing a similar, yet not identical situation.

If a fire starts in my neighborhood, I can't touch my neighbor's property to protect my assets, and not expect repercussions.

Aah, got it. Most of the talk is around protesting Bundy. Media got me messed up.

Yep. Unfortunately for your argument, the roles were reversed and the original fire was on BLM property and threatening their ranch. They lit the secondary fire on their own private property to protect their home, barns, etc.
Where the feds got them, was the fact that it did leak and burn 130 some odd acres of BLM land. Sounds like a lot, but I think the overall burn of both fires was in the 1000's of acres.
The ranchers admitted to it, because it's a standard practice out in the country. What'd they get for it? A terrorism charge.
Look, I'm not going to transpose the whole story for you. Go read about it yourself before making anymore uninformed comments.

How so? You are damaging property that is not yours. It's pretty basic, actually.

I side with the building occupiers...

They weren't charged with terrorism.

I wouldn't call these guys well-regulated, but that's beside the point.
Anyway, I understand the original use of militias. After the Revolution the Founding Fathers were shite scared of having a large standing army, but we've long since shaken off that tradition.
Hell, if Obama wanted to cut defense spending that would significantly reduce said army these ranchers would probably be screaming at the top of their lungs that he was making us weak.
With that said, I'm okay with a healthy fear of government.
