Soccer Game Attended by 40,000 Fans Likely Made Bergamo, Italy a Coronavirus Epicenter

(ROME) — It was the biggest soccer game in Atalanta’s history and a third of Bergamo’s population made the short trip to Milan’s famed San Siro Stadium.
Nearly 2,500 fans of visiting Spanish club Valencia also traveled to that Champions League match.
More than a month later, experts are pointing to the Feb. 19 game as one of the biggest reasons why Bergamo has become one of the epicenters of the coronavirus pandemic — a “biological bomb” was the way one respiratory specialist put it — and why 35% of Valencia’s team became infected.
The match, which local media have dubbed “Game Zero,” was held two days before the first case of locally transmitted COVID-19 was confirmed in Italy.

I remember during a World Cup involving Italy they had a little piece of trivial saying that during soccer games in Italy, the crime rate drops during the game. Puts a soccer game in perspective on how popular the sport is there so it's no surprise if an outbreak started there.

Typical attendance for Mardi Gras in New Orleans is about 1.4 million.

You could say that about a lot of countries
Wouldn’t be surprised if was the same in Brazil

That and the fact that many of the factories in Bergamo and the surrounding areas are either co-owned or do large amounts of business with companies based out of China and it's not uncommon for significant amounts of Chinese workers and business folks work in or travel to the area. Add to that a large amount of Chinese tourist that continued to visit northern Italy right up until the lockdown.
One last note, Italy has significant Chinese communities in and around its major population centers that have been there for in some cases, for a couple of hundred years. Much like other comunities (like myself, who go to Italy as often as I can to visit friends and relatives), they travel back and forth to China and did so until the lockdown.
