Apparently the boards or tiles or whatever can cost hundreds and it looks like poker with scrabble tiles with Chinese symbols on them.

yeah I don't get it either, recently had a mahjong event at the Biloxi diocese as a fundraiser event, like $50 to sit at a table and get your arse kicked by some old Asian lady.
There are soooooooooo many better and cheaper alternative board games (i.e. Catan, Ticket to Ride, Terraforming Mars, King of Tokyo, etc...the list goes on and on)
