You will also notice cranes being used for large family homes in Germany. I have seen it a lot of times in the countryside where the size would normally facilitate a couple of more manlifts in the US but they will have a central crane. I always assumed it was due to construction methods, they generally build homes much more "solid" than we do in the US. I have a friend who does residential and light commercial construction in England, he was here visiting one time when we were building a house, he couldn't wrap his head around 2x4 and 2x6 sheathed walls.
