My former manager wouldn't hire anyone without a follow-up thank you email regardless of qualifications. That's why she no longer has a job.

It's not a waste of time as at most it should only take a minute or so. But if you are one of 4-5-6 candidates, you need to stand out & this mite factor in a decision. Never hurts is my philosophy.
