I talk to my dogs and they usually tilt their heads a little to really try to understand what I’m saying.
The cats just look the other way when I talk to them

She’s a 1 year old terrier who is mischievous as hell. Pretty much talk to her in a state of awe and confusion. Constantly wondering how much plastic from the kid’s toys she can ingest and shite out before I have to have her stomach pumped.

She’s my 2 and 4 year old’s protector, though. She’ll buck up to me if I’m playing rough with them.

Good puppy or good boy. Gender matters.

My dogs are good boys but sometimes I do simply call them "dog." If you can call your urban homeboy "dog," surely you can call your dog, "dog."

Also, my cats are DGAF cats sometimes but I also have one of those orange cats that acts more like a dog. Hell, he comes running to the treat bag when I give my dogs treats. I have to give him one too. He will follow me when I go on a walk. He even knows "sit." But, that mother fricker can take a 12 hour nap on my bed sometimes. I wish I could sleep like that.

They show you the whites of their eyes when they want something.
They roll on their back with bellies up to let you know they trust you.
They let out a big sigh when they’re content (unlike humans when we’re stressed).
They yell or whimper when they’re hurt.
And a whole bunch of tail wagging patterns that convey their mood. But mostly happy when wagging.

Cats idk, I can’t read them..

Good girl or good dog.

She is a dog, with doggie needs, and amazing doggie abilities. I don't pretend she's not a dog. That said she is absolutely a part of the family. Hell, grandma asks "how's Roux" even before asking about any of the people in the house.

In a gruff cartoonish voice. He’s a smart rascal of dog who is critical of me. He frequently asks me when I get home, “where you been, you stinky old man?!”

No shame here!

Good boy/ big man (75 lb golden doodle)
The GSP gets called goofball most often

Cats get called "damnit cat"

I do love one of our cats, tons of personality. He hangs out with the dogs, super chill, he likes hazy IPAs, I pour it into a glass then he licks the top of the can. If I bring a miller lite or something over he gets mad and won't drink it. He will get a few licks in, get wide eyed and parkour up the house for a bit then he is back in my lap chilling

With border collies and German shepherds you talk to them.normally. in fact, they can not only pick up on language, but expressions and Inflection.

Add Aussies to that list. Herding breeds are just on another level.

Absolutely. They are the slightly surlier cousin of the collie.

We have a border collie/aussie shepherd/ACD mix and I would agree with that. Smart as a whip.

Old English sheepdog here.

Same. He's super in tune with words and also body language / movement.

He also really loves to tease other dogs.
