Don't turn mine off either. Heat in the winter and AC in the Summer are too valuable

Same here. It's too hot to not let the AC run.

Not an uncommon sight during my early childhood.

You know what else I do? I park at the pump when I stop to get a red bull and take a piss. Anyone else do this?

It's really not even an fire/explosion hazard. Cigarettes don't burn hot enough. Mythbusters guys visited this topic.

Lit cigs can absolutely start a fire. All it takes is some dumbass to ash/throw it in a trash can, especially if there are rags used to wipe up fuel in the can.

Cigarettes can burn paper, they are made of paper.

It may be a low risk but it is a much higher risk than not smoking. And like you pointed out, there are other factors associated to smoking that can raise the risk.

See it from time to time, but I think I mentioned it here before. My uncle use to own a gas station and when I was in college, depending on my schedule I would go there on a regular basis, sometimes between classes, or other things I had going on.

His sons, who are the same age as me, would run it when they were finished with classes so I would go to hang out with them as well.. The number of people who would smoke while pumping gas was unbelievable... There was a sign at each pump "No smoking while pumping gas or near near gas tanks".. People didn't care..

If they would see someone smoking, they would tell them smoking wasn't allowed near the pumps.. And more times than not, they either didn't listen or have an attitude about it. "I always smoke when I pump gas, aint nothing happened yet".. Some form of that statement was a pretty common response.

And I would imagine that if something did happen and they got injured (burns, etc) they would probably be wanting to sue.

Saturday I was stuck in traffic because of a train and the guy on the side of me was smoking a cigar and had a few (I’m assuming) oxygen tanks in his back seat.

Can't wait to see gas stations go the way of casinos and bars. I don't want to get cancer while pumping my gas.

Then move to Oregon or New Jersey.

Oh well, yeah that's different. If someone starts a trash can bonfire, it could get dangerous

I just think the myth busters guys did the public a disservice by making it seem like it was somehow safe to smoke at a gas station.

It may not catch an open container of gasoline on fire but that doesn’t make it safe to be smoking when at a gas station

If I'm not getting gas and there's a parking spot I won't do this.

If there's no parking spot, I'll put the pump in my tank to pretend like I'm getting gas

If you're going that far, why not just get actual gas?

Because if I've got 4/5ths a tank, its not worth getting my card out and pressing the buttons

If I’m smoking and need gas I get gas. Had a snowflake / PIA the other day tell me to put out my smoke at the pump. I asked if he had a wife ,kids or a dog. He asked why. Told him he had a lot better chance of them listening to him than me.

If I see someone smoking at the pump, I'll move to another pump.

Hopefully the blast won't be as bad.

And people that leave their kids strapped into their seats while fueling. That's a bad idea.

A lit cigarette is likely not hot enough to light gasoline, but it does get hotter when you take a drag. If someone accidentally spills out some gas as they are taking out the pump and they recently just took a drag and it fell out of their mouth, if the lit part fell in the right position and it is hot enough outside, it can light the gasoline.

It's unlikely it will happen, but there is a chance. If people would simply not smoke while pumping gas, there is no chance of it happening. As a general rule, it's never a good idea to have a fire around gasoline, unless you want to set it on fire.
