First time I went through Lagos airport on my way out of Nigeria (1994), I had to stop at 13 different “checkpoints” !!!!! I shite you not. About 3 - 4 were legit. All others were some government official trying to shake you down for anything they could get. No A/C in the airport and malaria mosquitoes all over. Anything they could do to slow you down, they would do it. They didn’t ask for much. A candy bar, a coke or a small amount of money would get you through faster. But if they got a little something from most of the 100-200 expats leaving every night, they could make quite a haul.

It’s been cleaned up quite a bit and it’s not too bad now. But still have 1-2 guys asking for bribes!! What a country!! ????

I had a meeting with Chouest Logistics a couple of months ago. Rig count offshore was 14 then and going to 44.

The problem with lease sales is that this is mostly recycling of leases hand back to the Feds. BP's Macondo was initially a Texaco lease handed back as to difficult to drill, then Dominion had it and opted not to do anything so handed back to Feds. BP picked it up

I don't know a damn thing about oil fields but I read a book about places like Nigeria that was eye opening. Sounded like they had an armament of private security to protect stuff. It was fascinating.

Doesn't ring a bell. When we met fellow Americans we usually hung out together (safer in numbers...talking about Nigeria here). We would get to the airport around noonish and the international flight didn't leave until 10:30pm. Go to the "bar" and drink Heinekens until departure.

Had to be careful went it got dark though. The airport would have random blackouts. Pitch dark. Key was to put your back against a wall and stay low. We had nationals we trusted that would stay with us until we boarded most times.

CSB: Met Hakeem Olajuwan in that same airport (he's from Nigeria).

Wanted to know what was in the box with all the locks on it.

In 2021 frick only having local security. You'd think the local security/ police would be able to hire some american's or at least non natives to run legit security that had local intel but could be trusted. Maybe those guys would never last/ live?

I wouldn't return to a place that had only armed local escorts.

Damn.

One of my friends works over there sometimes. He said when they ship major equipment over, they are the customer they work for has to pay "bribes" routinely to get the stuff to the facility. The port people are the worst he said, but even other local officials have their hands out when they learn something is coming through.

yep. This happens regularly. RA sources pay out huge bribes. I deal with radioactive sources and I’ve heard some horror stories about trying to ship those to rigs in Nigeria and other African countries

It’s a total shite show over there
