I don't know that it qualifies as self-defense but it does change the equation a bit. I am pretty certain a cop would be totally in the clear in a similar set of circumstances. Obviously they weren't cops here though, and pointing a firearm at someone can be considered assault in its own right.

Yeah people acting in self defense have gone to jail before.
The self defense also would only come into this case if they had a right to make a citizens arrest. But with all the current info, I believe they didn't.
These dudes will go to jail for a while.

If the dad leaked the tape, maybe there is real karmic justice in the world. The release of the tape is what changed the entire dynamic of this because the public could see it for themselves.
How in the world could he watch that tape and think things would go great for him and his son if he leaked it?
