When I was a kid my dad had a salt water aquarium. They are are beautiful, but he had problems with it. The fish evidently caught something from a new fish he put in and they all died. But they are cool.

How many gallons and what’s your filtration?

I ditched salt because I just didn’t have the time to maintain it anymore. Went with a Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyika cichlid setup on a plumbed 125. Similar colored fish with way less attention required

That’s awesome! I imagine your hobby costs a good deal more than mine.

I had one 20 years ago before I got married. Had a ton of liverock and coral, three clownfish, two puffers, two eels, and a couple saltwater snails. The only thing that survived the 6 hours in the UHaul was the three clownfish. The wife flushed them and put the aquarium out by the street while I was at work to cut down on our Instant Ocean expenses.

ETA: I also had two foxface rabbitfish at one point, but the jackass at the pet store didn't explain them and the internet was in its infancy. I was cleaning the tank one day and felt like a hot fireplace poker had just been jabbed into my arm. I flushed those bastards myself.

It's 40 gallon, with a 20 gallon sump. About 53 gallons of water. Protein skimmer, socks, chaeto, and floss for filtering. And the diamond goby keeps my sand stirred and clean.

Lol, probably. It's not cheap. But I got the system used for 800 and was over 3000 dollars worth easy. I buy alot of livestock and corals from local reefers at deal costs. But it's still not cheap, lol

Much cooler than my hobby, Salt Water Taffy.

It would be a little cooler if I made it. I just eat it.

I wish you could get a shot of that goby. Those guys are beautiful and serious workhorses in an aquarium.

I think I have around 70 or so models in my stash. I have something like 120-130 on display between my model room and office. Average price of a model is around $40-$50. So, on models, I’d say over the years I’ve spent somewhere around $8,000 to $9,000 on the kits themselves. No idea what I’ve spent on supplies and such. But that’s over three decades.

The goby is named Andy, after Andy from shawshank. He disappeared for about 3 days after I added him to the tank. Up and vanished like a fart in the wind. I though he had jumped out somehow and the cat got him. Then... he just showed up, and is always out and about now.

Cool.

If I ever learn how to post pics, I’ll post pics of my hobby. Me sitting around watching TV, drinking beer.
