He did pay for it, and he paid for the renovations. It was state owned, which is why the deal was made. It was costing the state money, yet wasn't being used.

The state now pays him to rent it out, supposedly saving the state money

Like I said, read up

How about the $20+ million that goes annually to keep La Tech, ULL, and ULM in FBS?

Eh what?
Unfortunately for you Google is around. Go Google saints tax deal and read the first Forbes article that comes up.
The state pledged 85 mil in renovations then guaranteed the extra income generated from those renos. Meaning if Benson doesn't make what the state said he would, they cut him a check for the difference.
That's just the beginning. Please tell me how we don't know how it works again?
By the way, your Benson tower deal? Yeah the state is paying 33% higher than normal rent on that building as a concession ton Benson. That's a $40 mil gouging over 15 years.
Yea Saints though? Right?
And you were pissed cuz Schedler's wasting storage space money.

Yea, I read that, economic impact studies from UNO, LSU, etc.

Plenty of material out there for you. It's been debated many times.

So has the state paid a check for the difference yet?

Why should Benson pay for renovations on a stadium he doesn't own (although he's doing that this year)

How much would it have cost the state to renovate and use it? Why did it sit there rotting for years?

And that still isn't getting close to $400 million out of taxpayer pockets

Go read about the economic impact of the last super bowl for Nola and Louisiana.

Derp

And I'm not arguing for subsidies either. Just know what you're talking about, cuz the OP didn't, and neither did Powerman

You really don't like saying the state is paying Benson to stay here do you.

I give Blanco credit she had the balls to just cut him a check.

Jindal had to hide what he was doing behind 10 different deals and send people like you out to spin it.

Whatever. I'm not against it. I'm okay with pitching in to keep the Saints here.

Just don't tell me you can't explain the miles buyout to taxpayers when this saints deal was done and the taxpayers were happy about it.

Its bullshite

Well they paid the 85 mil of our money to renovate his building for him. And we are only 4 years into this deal. What happens if the Saints continue this downward trend?

Why wouldn't I mind saying that? That is exactly what I'm saying

You'd rather pay straight cash?

There is about over a 50,000 person waiting list right now

Also, is the stadium just used for the saints?

Nope, but Benson gets a lot of revenue from each event.

how does it look that Louisiana gives Tom Benson $400 million of public funds to subsidize his football team

do they give him this every year, or was it a pre-agreed amount and a portion of the 400 is given every year until the contract is up?

Yes he does, and the state generates money because of the saints too

I'm not arguing that I like it, but if the alternative is not having the Saints, then the deal is a net positive for the state financially

The $400 million bs comes from a variety of things like revenue from tickets, revenue from concessions, rent payments at Benson Tower from the state and other businesses, the Mercedes Benz naming rights, etc. And it is through 2025 I believe without looking it up. The $400m is the total

It isn't actually $400 million being paid via taxpayers.

There is an argument to be made for this deal as well as other deals in the NFL, but the OP and others need to make it an honest one. That's how politics works these days though.

I wrote a 20+ page paper on this my last year of college, and I went into it completely against the deal. It was better for the state than the previous deal imo, and it certainly has been better for the development of that area.

That's some pretty crazy accounting

The state paying him to rent a building saves the state money?

Compared to letting the building sit and rot while renting other spaces or paying to renovate the building themselves?

Supposedly

The state is paying Benson to be here. Period. Just because it might be a better deal than before and saves money doesn't mean it's not still paying him.

And it is an economic boon to New Orleans. Not directly back to state but overall economically for the whole city.

That is my whole fricking point.

Somehow someway people convinced the legislature that paying Benson from tax dollars was a net plus. So they did it.

But now all of a sudden paying to upgrade the LSU coaching job for same overall economic reasons with PRIVATE donor money is untenable and no one will understand it? bullshite. It's actually SIMPLER to explain than that Saints deal and this doesn't use tax dollars.

That's what's bullshite
