There is a common belief among long distance runners that asphalt is more forgiving on the joints than concrete. I never bought into it,
It's not really en opinion or belief, it's an inarguable fact that asphalt is more forgiving than concrete.

yeah but you left out "on joints". that's pretty arguable.
personally, having logged thousands of miles on both, i cant tell a difference.

your opinion is noted. i will continue to run on the street to avoid small kids on bikes, moms with strollers, cars backing out blindly behind hedges, inconsistent lighting, and random uneven slabs and roots
Not an opinion. The law. Ideally, you run on the street when you need to go around such things but then get back on the sidewalk. Or go to a trail or a track or a treadmill.
Now, I don't expect the above to be followed; runners and joggers have been running on roads in violation of the law for as long as I can remember, but when a pedestrian decides to be in the road instead of the sidewalk, motorists aren't the problem. The pedestrian is.

"I normally run stop signs and this morning actually had to come to a complete stop because a pedestrian who has the right of way was doing nothing wrong."
For reference, this incident occurred on a 3 way intersection. I did not have a stop sign, but the street that the runner was coming from did have a stop sign, which he literally ran through....
