whoa....
big problem, but
you need to take the bull by the horns...take her to the shooting range, have some pros talk to her about weapon safety...sign her up for a class
tell her to step up...just like an old fashioned pioneer woman with a shotgun...
same goes for the child...just show and tell and that's it til he gets older 9-10-11
do you have friends with weapons? chat them up, see what they'd do

Besides, I did not say there is ever a guarantee. You're more likely to be killed by someone you know than by a random anyway. But that said - if you're really that worried about a home invasion the best (again, not foolproof) strategy is to move.
