Home plate collisions have not been "outlawed". Blocking the base path without the ball has been outlawed (in most cases). Intentional collisions have been outlawed. What you describe was unintentional and it sounds like the umpire made the correct call.

Stop bitching about rec softball and drink your beer.

Had a situation tonight in our softball league where a runner was heading towards home, and the catcher stepped out partially into the baseline to attempt to catch the ball and make a play. The runner barrelled straight into the catcher just as the ball was getting there and the runner tagged home after the collision and the ball went flying.

Sorry you got stuck playing in the same league as Pete Rose

But I am like some of the other guys in this thread. I stopped playing rec league softball years ago for the same reasons. My friends and I were out there to run around, get fresh air, down a few beverages, and have fun for an hour. Most of the teams we played against, in the lowest league, mind you, were just way too damned serious about it. They would show up with $400 bats and uniforms and shite. I knew we were in trouble one night when we played against a guy wearing uniform number 69 and on the back, where the name should have been, it said "HitMan". I felt bad for a lot of those guys…I mean, if their coach hadn't hated them in high school, I am sure they would have made the majors.

Yeah, I play coed softball, it's a good time, but it would take a real douchebag to intentionally cause a collision. Those sorts of people do exist unfortunately, but typically when there's a collision it's because of a fielder not having situation awareness and moving right into the base path to field a ball, or just because they are clueless. If someone is running full speed, there's not much they can do in that situation.

Always blows my mind these people exist.

I would agree that most of the collisions are accidents. Usually easy to tell if it's an accident.

I say if you can't handle a collision, stay your arse out of the baseline puddin. It sounds like the catcher was the one that initiated that collision. Sorry it didn't work out in your favor.

I was playing (co-ed BREC mind you) once and had a guy take me out with a slide... at first base. As if I was going to try to turn two at first fricking base.

Just to clarify, the catcher did not initiate contact as he was stationary waiting for the ball to arrive.

The runner intentionally initiated contact and could have easily slid or slightly adjusted his run to safely touch home.

In all serioiusness, you avoid the collision if possible, but the catcher should stay out of the baseline in rec ball. That's just asking for someone to hit you.

That contradicts what you said in the original post... but still the runner should give a wide berth if possible because you never know what's going to happen if there is a throw coming in.

Just felt like this should be posted again for emphasis.

1) Catcher shouldn't block the plate in SP softball
2) Runners should avoid the catcher in the case of him trying to catch an errant throw
3) If catcher has ball and is blocking plate, runner should concede that he is out

Yes. It's part of the game.

its slow pitch softball. I would say that by adding slow and soft to a description. The spirit of the game has already need adequately altered

Inherent risks of unathleticism, coupled with about 8-10 tallboys... rules or no rules that guy didn't stand a chance.
