So how much time does a 4 year old get off for Mardi Gras? Do they have the whole week or just Fat Tuesday?

For guaranteed snow this far out, Taos Ski Valley NM is the closest. They have a tubing hill and other stuff to do besides skiing.

It's one of my favorite places... set up like a Swiss alpine village and they get dumped on later in the winter.

I'm going to have to check that place out myself... 17hr drive

Just got home from Gatlinburg today. Downtown Gatlinburg was just fine. Most of the fire was up in the chalet village area between Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Had we not driven up the mountains, you wouldn't have seen a lot of evidence of the fire. They have a couple of new hotels right at the corner of the strip (Courtyard by Marriott and Holiday Inn Express). They have snow tubing at Ober Gatlinburg, can walk there from the hotel and take the tram, just book in advance because the time slots fill up quickly...we could only get tickets for 7 pm.

Boone,N.C/Sugar Mt will be your shortest/ best bet for Southern snow pack & a chance for seeing snow on 4 days notice. They've got several trails & tubing hills.

Maybe Memphis if you watch the weather and hit town right after a winter storm. Need flexible plans.

Northern parts of West Virgina or Pennsylvania mountains if you want a more sure thing. New Mexico may be closer.

my kid wants to play in the snow this weekend. May drive up north of Jafrica and stay at a hotel for a few nights. Maybe around Ridgeland.

You might want to look into last minute cheap flights instead of driving.

Made the trip many times driving. Skied Angel Fire (once), Red River many times, Taos 3-4 times. We have driven via Sante Fe and Amarillo. The easiest and quickest we have found going to Red River is I49 to Shreveport then Dallas then Wichita Falls then Amarillo then Dalhart then Springer. Going this route, you first hit Angel Fire then Red River (about 30-45 minutes) then Taos (another 45 minutes)...all depending on weather conditions. Angel Fire is a hard 15 hours straight.

Winterplace is right up the road from Pipestem. Stayed at Pipestem. They have cabins and a lodge that is awesome. Also you can rent sleds at the golf course for a couple of bucks. Winterplace has a tubing park also.
