Well, I read some interesting articles, was given some incomplete answers, told I was gay, learned some good rules of thumb, saw a pic of my SO posted, so...
pretty good thread

Has she given you any pointers other than she likes vintage rings? I feel your pain with the vintage ring, thing, bro.

have you talked to her mom about the setting? although it is a longshot, she may have an heirloom ring or something that you can use and you will only need to replace/upgrade the stone.

Two words:
Wal. Mart. Spending over $99 bucks on an engagement ring is nuts.

She's shown some pictures of what she means by "vintage". That has been very helpful as most everything else she's said has been completely unhelpful. The main thing is that I at least know her style when it comes to the setting. I've hit it out of the park every time I've bought cheap rings for her as presents (ranging from $20-$40). We've been dating for almost 4 years now so she knows me proposing is coming, just not sure exactly when.

I like the same thing. Just got my ring in July. We found at an estate jeweler. I couldn't tell you what size the diamond is or the clarity or any of that BS. Don't care. I can tell you it's a 1910 art deco and has 4 sapphires in it along with the diamonds. Platinum with very intricate etching on the band. I had originally wanted a sapphire ring, but fell in love with this one when we saw it. My fiance went back the next day and bought it. I get a lot of compliments on it. Estate jeweler is the way to go IMO, if that's her style.

ETA: I wanted a one of a kind and knew it wouldn't be found at a regular jeweler. You can find vintage styles at regular jewelers, though. But, you'll probably pay a lot more.

The older vintage cuts had larger facets than the newer cuts. There has been a resurgence in the past couple of years for precision cut, large faceted diamonds. Good Old Gold has their own cut in both a round and a cushion. There are videos on their website of these and they reflect light much different than a traditional cut, many feel, in a good way...

It looked like I might have been able to get that family ring (her grandmother's) for a while, but it ended up going to her older cousin who got engaged a few months back.

They're all over. A lot of antique stores (at least where I live) have some. We walked into one of our usual shops and the guy was a new vendor. A lot of those shop owners know each other, and I bet if you ask around, you can find someone near you. Also, I know this is weird, but if you go on ebay and look at art deco or Edwardian (or whatever style your SO likes) estate rings together, you can get a good idea of what type of setting etc she is truly interested in. I love art deco furniture and lighting, but really wasn't aware that I liked early art deco jewelry until started looking. I figured most pieces would be too ornate for my taste, but the earlier pieces aren't. When we saw this ring, it was everything I had been looking for, and I love it! It's not as easy as going to Jared's or whatever, but you'll eventually find something she truly loves.

Also, something to keep in mind about antique jewelry is that it doesn't photograph well. I, of course, sent out pics to everyone when I got mine, and it's lovely. But, always when people see it in person they comment about how much prettier it is in person. Photographer said vintage jewelry is always like that, even for a professional. Something to do with age and patina. So, it's something to keep in mind if she wants the engagement and wedding photos to really showcase the ring. Might want to go the reproduction route if so.

Just got done getting an engagement ring not to long ago.

Big ring companies advantages are the fact that you can do payments on a ring.
Local ring shops, you can get a bigger diamond for the same price as the big companies.
Pawn shops, cheapest for biggest ring, but you have to be okay with the fact that you are buying a ring that was part of a failed marriage.

But really, big ring companies charge crazy amount. Some places I went to, a carat diamond ring cost almost as much as a 1/4 carat diamond ring at the big name places.

However, sometimes, Macys has sales where you can combine any 3 coupons to buy any product. Had a friend get a nice pearl bracelet for his gf for less than $100 on at Macys doing that (used 2 20% off coupons and a 30% off).
