I hear people say that you should have your septic tank pumped out every 2-5 years depending on the number of people in the home that are using it.

I've been in my house for 24 years with a family of 5 and have never had to pump it out once.

Is that normal?

Try the Home and Garden board.
You'll get shitty ( no puns intended) answers here.

We have one at the camp, use is seldom. For a family of 5, I'd do it. we get our's done when the next door neighbor does who lives there.

We pumped ours every 2 years, family of 5. It was cheap to do, and they always found things that shouldn’t have been flushed.

House was built in 1986. Plumber made a septic tank out of concrete culvert, guessing 6 ft diameter from when in 2016 it was first pumped out. Grandparents lived in it for 12 years, then I moved in 2001. Pretty low usage but 30 years is a long time.

2017 it had to be revamped with new lines from the tank out. The old plastic perforated tubes had simply collapsed from age.
