how do you know when it's time to get this thing pumped out? or.........do you just do it every few years?

When toilets start backing up for no good reason it's probably getting full. About every 3 years will keep you from a catastrophe.

Just drain it to the nearest ditch. I foresee no problems.

I believe that it's already "piped" to the ditch. is there a certain way to drain it?

When a septic tank is functioning properly it should go 25 years without having to be pumped. Bacteria in the tank should be doing the cleanup.

Yeah you usually don't have to pump it out.

Sorry, meta-humor.
But seriously...septic means country living. Means $$$

This may be the theory, but I don't know anyone who hasn't had some kind of trouble within 10-15 years.

if you installed it in 2001, it is likely a modern waste water treatment plant...basically a cement tank with air being injected.
I would bet that it does not need pumping, but one of the drain lines is clogged...some have a pump and that can go bad if someone is throwing tampons in the thing...
short of it is, when the thing starts backing up, it is either clogged or full and there is nothing that you can do about either...call a plumber...

My parents house has never needed the septic tank pumped out,in over 40 years.
They always put yeast down the drains, once each month and that's about the only maintenance that was ever done.
About 10 years ago,we put in a place where my brother could park his travel trailer outback sometimes, when he was visiting. We had to dig at 1 corner of the tank, and knock out a hole,to set up a drain input pipe. There wasn't even any smell when we knocked out the hole, and we tried to shine a light in the tank,to see if might need pumping, and couldn't even see anything inside.
I think if a system was installed properly and maintained,it might not ever need pumping. I think that is what the yeast is for.
