The reality is that the people getting pissed off about stolen valor are worse than the attention seekers that are actually "stealing" it.
It's fricking hilarious. Low IQ mongrels.

Does that include calling guys out FOR calling guys out? Because, if so, I have some bad news for you Carson...

it includes them. it's the most hilarious circle jerk online today. all my friends who put in trigger time don't give a frick. god forbid some guy who handled logistics sees a guy with a uniform problem though

There are some that are idiots, but there are a great many doing good work out there for their brothers.
Stolen valor isn't just wearing a uniform and trying to look cool; these people do it to get free shite, con people, get jobs, etc.
You can ask pretty much anyone you know if they know or have a friend that is or was a Navy SEAL and they'll say yes. Sadly, their friends are lying. There's an old DEVGRU team leader and his wife doing great work outing fake SEALs.
I think I've visited their site, and some others. I have been rather surprised to see some of the names that pop up.
Big difference between what they're doing and what many others are doing - if I remember correctly - is that they 'out' the people that put stuff like SEAL Team or CAG or whatever on their job apps, resumes, official bios and so forth, looking to reap some sort of reward in a professional sense. I believe they notify employers and such as well. I support their efforts.
When it comes to posers that just dress up and such, we should just ignore that stuff.
When it comes to people using it to get discounts etc - well, that's not uncommon, people make up stuff to get into the discount category all the time.
Personally, I think we should ask many business owners to stop special treatment for people that are military. As long as they are understanding of some of the odd circumstances that come with military service, I think that's good enough. Discounted movie tickets, a break on the price of a set of tires....that stuff isn't necessary.
Yes, I know the bottom of the pay chart really struggles sometimes, but the pendulum swings and it can really cause damage. The public gets tired of wars, gets tired of DoD funding levels etc. They clammer for reductions, never realizing it's the troops that suffer first and suffer the most. The F-35 is the biggest waste in the history of the DoD, but it's not going anywhere. However, about 500k total will probably get tossed out of the military - active, guard, reserve - by the time the downsizing stops. Maybe more. Many of them will be career types and many families are going to be hurt badly by this.
Also, the DoD is very fond of finding or making up reasons to punitively discharge someone, during these downsizings, that way they don't have to pay severance, or allot any duration of medical care, GI Bill, etc. The public doesn't hear about that stuff, and that's just how the DoD likes it.
The VA is nowhere close to being prepared for this increase in enrollment and Vets with problems are going to go through hell trying to get a service connected rating. In the interim, which can go for years, many will have to use Obama care, they'll pay hundreds per month, have sky high deductibles, and life will total crap for them, not to mention their families that they will struggle to support.
GI Bill is great if you're single. If you've been toting a ruck and a rifle for ten years and get unceremoniously dumped by the DoD, you'll probably need job training / college. Family guys won't be able to do that and bring in income to support a family, pay health insurance etc.
When these types of stories hit the news (they rarely will because the media will consider it boring), people will shrug their shoulders - after all, during the wars they gave discounts on drinks and clapped during those homecoming videos and said 'thanks for your service' at the air port. Their allotment of charity will have been consumed.
Homelessness in Vets is high and it's only going to get higher, and women will probably outpace the men in that, indicators point to.
I'd rather that supply of good will by the general public stay in the bank so they can get behind legislation and other efforts to fix the VA, not make so much noise about the DoD budget, or to make noise about which parts of the budget get affected, and I really wish the general public would get aware of the problems in the military justice system, and so forth.
COL Boyd said 'people, ideas, hardware, in that order'. Unfortunately, during downsizing, the DoD punishes people, ideas, hardware, in that order.
Finally, the more combat experience we purge today, the more bodies we needlessly bury in the next war.

Best response yet. I couldn't care less about someone trying to play GI Joe and walk around in a fricked up uniform for free Starbucks, but the guys who claim to be SOF and get hired and promoted over more qualified people because of it are the worst.
I love how the fake SEALs try to say it's not on their DD-214 or they don't have a DD-214 because their work was "classified." Sure, there are those on SAPs and the like, but that doesn't mean your prior training or BUD/S record wouldn't still be there.
As far as the VA is concerned, they are by far the most corrupt of all gov't agencies, they're spending millions on sculptures and art while vets wait hours for an appointment.

I've come across a lot of awesome PJs and combat controllers in my time. The "chair force" gets a bad rap but a lot of folks don't realize that on all those big CAG and DEVGRU missions you hear about on the news, there's usually an airman or two fighting alongside them, the Bin Laden raid included.
My nephew was an officer in AFSOC and won the Bronze Star for his actions in Iraq.

Precisely why we should not care about stolen valor - unless they actually steal someone's valor, as in ID theft type of deal. If you serve, you're part of that equation that sustains these freedoms. If some fools want to dress up and make up stories, 'without fear of censorship', hell that's good man, all they're doing is reminding us of our role in keeping them free to be dooshes, and many others are free to do wonderful things with their lives.
The posers are distasteful, but I don't believe you should allow the word 'disgrace' to enter your thoughts. Our true warriors are not disgraced - posers don't have that ability, and we shouldn't give it to them.
(official bios and such are different, as I mentioned in previous post)

He should be proud.
Read the book "Horse Soldiers" about the SF ODAs and airmen that went to Afghanistan prior to the invasion to assist the Northern Alliance and call in air strikes on the Taliban. The Green Berets were having trouble calling in strikes due to various reasons, so they brought in AF combat controllers who fought next to them. They rode into battle on fricking horseback.

I agree 100%. The majority who are just walking around in a uniform that isn't anywhere close to regulation have a mental illness. It's the ones using it to gain financially, etc. that need to be taken care of.

I think a big problem with VA hospital functioning is that there are essentially two software platforms involved in someone's medical record. They are parallel but have nodes at which they connect. For information to be properly relayed it has to be sent properly, the system has to be configured properly to port things where they belong, receiving end permissions have to be established, authorizations for actions have to be in place, the various parties must know who does what, and all of this must function for parallel, joint, and communicating processes. It's clumsy and inefficient, and prone to error. I also believe it lacks validation capability.
For the record, I surmise this after piecing together stuff I've dealt with, asking my doc questions, seeing what is showing up on his screen, and looking at my medical record.
Also, there's so much flexibility in them, they can be manipulated for 'bad' purposes if one chose to do so. Whether malice or incompetence, it's still a failure.
At some point in the future more information about this will come out. I suspect what will happen is that people will go to the Hill and say 'our IT infrastructure is sooooo old, we need billions to fix it' and nothing will get fixed but money will be spent.
Some say the military sends you away to be killed by someone else, and if necessary brings you back so the VA can finish the job. Dark humor I guess.
