I'm 55, not going back and reading this thread, but I would say that hopefully most of your groundwork is laid financially by now, if its not, not sure I have a lot of advice and I'm not gonna focus on that.

From a health standpoint, (1) tighten up your diet - if you are eating a lot of processed trash and generally unhealthy food, modify that - you can still enjoy food, just make it a point for it to be good stuff (2) Make exercise the part of your day that doesn't get squeezed out - you need some cardio, but moving towards late 40's and into 50's you really need to maximize defense of your muscle mass, and if you are deficient in that area you need to make hay - sarcopenia is your enemy moving into late middle age, and resistance training is an absolute must to be healthy both physically and metabolically. You can greatly improve your all mortality risk simply by meeting very modest exercise goals and greatly enhance your quality of life by being fit moving into your later years.

From a relationship standpoint, especially if your kids are out of the house find something you and your spouse can do together and enjoy - doesn't have to be all-consuming, just don't lose touch and drift, even if its cooking and enjoying a nice meal, or having a nice meal out and lingering, talking about things. My wife and I are both busy, but the thing I notice the most since kids are either out in careers or away at college/professional school is just how much time we have.

This ins't all inclusive by any means, and none of this is anything new under the sun, but I think a few points of emphasis that can help.

I got some good stuff from y’all. Hearing some common themes of: exercise (and stretch a lot), save a ton of money (obviously), make time with your kids, maybe make your home fun so they come back to visit. Thanks.

Nobody suggesting to work weekends. So that’s good.

I, well over 60 years old, have only two pieces of advice for you: unfortunately, I have forgotten both.

Ah thanks for reminding --- hire a yard guy.

(unless you genuinely enjoy that work)

If your company offers a 457 or other type of salary deferment plan, use it as much as you can once you’re 50. If your kids are done college or the mortgage is paid off, direct that same amount of money to the plan, along with any raises. You’re basically creating your own social security plan that will bridge you until real SS kicks in.

It depends on health, money, kids, grandkids, etc. But have fun and be as active as possible doing what you like physically ..travel, golf, etc. Taking entire family on a trip is nice.
