I have a friend from Australia, everybody always mixes them and New Zealanders up.
He said that there's an easy way to tell the two countries apart-

Many Americans can't tell a UK accent from a Aussie from a Kiwi. Then it gets even more complicated when a UK, Australian or New Zealander is in one of the other's country, most Americans don't even notice.
My first exposure to an Australian accent was Monty Python goofing on them. It was such an authentic goof that it made me aware of the differences early on. Brian.
