A little exaggeration there.

I'm definitely not saying it is the hardest job in the world but it's definitely not as easy as you are making it out to be.

It really can't be that hard.

It is much more difficult than that.
Current, different ships/foreign crews, everything recorded, dumbass tug captains w/ their heads up their arse, tons of oversight, etc.
Good luck when the top speed of the tanker is 10 knots and the current is running at 12.

you have no idea. Do you even have a clue how hard it is to even become a bar pilot? Put aside the nepotism, but the training and education you have to go through takes at least 10 years before you can even get your licence.

How old was he? I'm sure I know who you are talking about.
Probably a lot younger than he looked. This was in '88-'90 when I lived in the Woodward.

Lol, no.
Have you ever been on the bridge of a tanker even?

having been on the MR when fishing out of Venice, I can't imagine its too easy in fog or when the River is up and hauling arse during the spring. I realize modern electronics and navigation aids help out, but I'm reasonably sure its a bit taxing to be a pilot. It aint like driving your party barge around Lake Maureapas.

I toured an aircraft carrier once.

OK, you're good to go, but six weeks minimum.

On the outside. Look, I'm not saying it's a walk in the park, but there is no way the skill required is worth half a million a year. It's a damn racket.

Well, that's a separate conversation, IMO.
There is a ton of responsibility that these guys have to deal with.
FWIW, every country does this (Guided pilots).
You don't want a bunch of foreign numbnutted pilots with no knowledge of the river drag-assing around out there.

Per Crescent Pilots Association you have to have the following to be accepted as an apprentice:
1. College Degree (most accepted applicants come from a maritime college)
2. 18 months experience working on the river earning a 1st Class pilots license and a limited Master License
3. Those without a college degree must work for 6 years to obtain their licenses
Apprentices will perform over 500 ship movements per year before taking the examination
The Board of River Boat Port Pilot Commissioners sends their recommendation to the governor who officially appoints each pilot after they complete training/exams/simulations

The dues they pay are very high, $10-20K per year, if not more.

Let's see you pilot a cruise ship full of people through a 4 mile stretch of shallow water at night with constant moving and shifting sandbars. It's not as easy as one would like to believe.
