NATO is a shell of what it used to be. As in we, the United States of America are the only NATO country that could feasibly to anything about it.

Only problem is we don't have near enough left in Europe to do anything about it. Seriously, go do a bit of research and you'll find out we've got enough forces in Europe to perhaps defend a semi-large city.

If war came tomorrow, we'd be forced to try and pull off a REFORGER on a scale never envisioned even back when we were doing REFORGER exercises on a regular basis. Which, in case you're wondering the last REFORGER exercise was almost 25 years ago.

Why would Russia do this? They'd basically bankrupt themselves as Europe would turn off the pipes.

They'll get more desperate and the saber rattling will get louder when we begin LNG shipments to Europe.

Our only chance to send this guy......

In here, there were two guys killing each other, but I guess that's better than twenty million. I guess what I'm trying to say, is that if I can change, and you can change, everybody can change!

I'm going to request a sticky for this thread so you can show off your military knowledge, casually mention your service, and get a few buzzwords out of your system in one place instead of polluting the board every few weeks with your newest chicken little "omg the Russians are coming" thread.

No but it can severely disrupt the vital, and stretched out, supply lines necessary to keep and blitzkrieg type invasion into Europe.

1. No they won't

2. They have a comparative advantage and can lower the price and price us out.

3. Even in the darkest moments of the Cold War or when they started losing pieces they didn't do that. Do you really think this Starbucks drinking generations of Russians are going to invade Europe? Please.

I think they're quite happy. And as for my knowledge, or lack thereof, when it comes to military history, I'll let my reputation here speak for itself.

Its been shown over and over that while Russia may have the military establishment to do it, they don't have the financial backing for a war outside of their home front. Take out their European income, and it becomes laughable that they could maintain an offensive force.

Maybe they'd take over Europe in 60 days, but they'd be bankrupt in 55.

Blitzkreig?

Nah.

WW3 will be decided in the same way ww1, and ww2 was in Europe.

Can you close the Atlantic? No sense of urgency if the Americans can't get involved anyway.

I think Europeans would gladly pay a dollar more per cubic foot for natural gas if it meant not having to deal with the Kremlin oligarchy.

Possibly not, but I never underestimate the powers of the state controlled media of Russia.

I agree. I think that's likely the biggest deterrent.

Dude,

Part of that reason is because we keep expanding into their buffer zone. Moscow has no geographic barriers; it's straight plains all the way there. Russia's current geopolitical moves make since in context considering we had made promises not to expand NATO and here we are.

And here we have nbc, msnbc and cnn.

Here's the deal. Russia, like nato has too many conventional forces and have to flex that muscle. But everybody in Europe knows that the real threat to security in Europe comes from Islamic terrorists. This is why Putin is so valuable right now.

I agree. I think it was a mistake to expand NATO eastward. These countries bring little to nothing to the table, with the only possible exception being Poland. And by having these countries, countries that have for centuries been either under direct Russian control or at least considers it's sphere of influence, all we've done is expand NATO's defensive requirements.

This is why it took us so long to adjust. During the Cold War we always kept bat phones so when shite heated up we could call them. And the wars were proxy wars: Angola, Latin America, Asia. No one was invading the mainland. There is no negotiating with these Islamic crazies. They have no nation state. No endgame. Just loonies wanting jihad. The Russians had families and girlfriends.
