This is a dangerous game of chicken.

quote:

Russia has reportedly equipped its warplanes flying in Syria with air-to-air missiles for self-defense for the first time, Reuters reported on Monday citing Russian news agencies.

The missiles, reportedly capable of hitting targets at a distance of up to 37 miles, will supplement the state-of-the-art S-400 missile systems Russia says it has deployed to the Russian Hemeimeem air base near Latakia, Syria — about 30 miles south of the Turkish border.

The air-to-air missiles and the S-400 surface-to-air missile systems, if deployed, are evidently meant as a message to deter Turkish jets from shooting down Russian planes in the future.

"The message remains as it was last week from Putin: We won't let it happen again," Zilberman told Business Insider.

Not surprising, really. Seems like a natural progression given the recent events and the nature of those nations involved.

I Highly doubt they have had no aircraft armed with air to air missiles there until now. Sensationalistic article

Of Chicken?

They don't want to run a fowl of Russia or they might find their goose cooked.

This is the first time that the planes flying over Syria will now start to carry air to air missiles. Previously, there had been no perceived aerial threat.

I read this as they have the air-to-air missiles as their wingmen...

Not that they are armed with them...

I'm honestly surprised they weren't armed with them to begin with.

It's seem weird, no?

You'd think an airman would insist on flying with an a2a load.

F16 is a good platform but the Turkish models are not equipped quite the same as the standard US models. Turkey does not have that many of the newer variants.

If Russia deploys some of the new SU-30/35 type planes, Turkey may be in trouble.
