Well, unless you're right next to the river-like within a few hundred yards-it won't be very deep, and it won't be very fast. You can probably outwalk it, and even if you don't, it won't be over your head in most places. It'll just cover a huge area.

My dad fell off gangplank into the MS about 35 years ago. He broke his back from the fall and the only thing that saved him was his lifejacket. He still has it to this day.
