Any company can’t just go in and buy a public utility.

I think the breakover point for cost per kWh from nuclear to combined cycle gas is about 20 years, including the time for construction but not permitting.
There are three closed nuclear power plants set to reopen specifically for powering AI data centers, one each in Iowa, Michigan, and Pennsylvania (3 Mile Island). This obviously shortens time and cost, I think all of them are supposed to be back online in the next 4 years.

I work for CLECO, and I haven't heard a peep about us being bought by Meta. We have monthly meetings with all upper mgmt including the CEO, and there has been no mention of Meta other than us possibly being involved in data centers.
ETA: from what i remember of our last meeting, was that we were getting purchased by another VC company, and it will be completed soon.

Depends on your cost of capital. Nuke LCOE gets hammered on that and it really makes it an almost impossible financial model to overcome.

I am pretty sure META has enough cash on hand to buy up all the assets of all 5 companies and form META Power and Light.
Maybe they can get rid of some of those META glasses as gifts to new customers like how banks used to give out umbrellas and toasters.

They can have 10x the cash and it wouldn’t matter because these are regulated monopolies.

Wonder if Zuck would build a nuke plant on the Red. And would Louisiana let him?

Isn’t CLECO a cooperative? Even when I lived in LA I’ve never lived in one. But who owns the business? I guess the state has the power to stop this.

Just because they are a regulated monopolies doesn’t mean they are not cash cows and have the PSC in their back pockets to write the rules in their favor. They are relatively safe investments and can pretty much make a profit in any market conditions.
See Entergy and its long line of profitability and passing on costs on to its consumers. The only time they got into trouble was when they started investing in out of area power stations and nuclear sites.
But speaking of CO-OP’s, couldn’t Facebook create its own and purchase directly from MISO so it can get the best wholesale rates. Now they probably would still get fricked by Entergy since they own the high voltage transmission lines to get the power to them.
As far as CO-OP’s, SLECA is one and Washington and St. Tammany Electric is the other one I know. The neat thing about the COOP’s that as a utility customer, you own a piece of the company and are eligible for FEMA grant assistance after a storm unlike a private company like Entergy.
You also have independent municipal power providers like Lafayette Utilities System, Houma Municipal Power, Morgan City Municipal Power, etc. That fall under LEPA

With the self-admitted political bias at Meta, guess who gets their power rates increased first? Guarantee it's not

Haha, I’d put my money on Entergy.
