The standard RSVP system is outdated and stupid. It's about to be the year 2020. Incorporate an RSVP via text into a party planning application.

Only required for a large event or one that costs the host per guest / venue that requires a head count. Unfortunately, today everyone puts RSVP on everything. That being said, if you are invited and the invite has and RSVP then RSVP (whether the host knows the proper way or not).

Plan on having food and drink for the amount you invite.
If you can’t or don’t want to cover that many people, don’t invite them

Me neither. I said backyard wrestling events.

Our invitation does not include a card to return. It includes a phone number to text or an email. So easy to RSVP.

Maybe people think standard text messaging rates apply?

Well that's much better!
I still think a text based system, to alert your guest, in conjunction with the mailed invite, would be best.
Then have the app help with planning/logistics. Maybe something that the wedding/event planner businesses can incorporate into their services.

I thought you only RSVP if you plan on going, guess that’s not the case. Did not know that

We only use invitations for larger and more formal occasions. We send a Save the Date email about 3 months before the event. Then we mail an invitation about 6 weeks before. The RSVP is requested no later than 10 days before with text and email info for the RSVP.
There is no excuse not to RSVP. We feel honored if someone’s thinks enough of us to include us. We RSVP in a timely manner and write it on the calendar if we are going. Courtesy is a dying trait.

RSVP means to respond of your intentions....coming or not coming.
Some people use “Regrets Only” which means to only respond if you are not coming. I think that method will work less than the RSVP method.
