Late to this thread but it’s really hard.
Upfront investment obviously is key. Machinery, truck, trailer, and upkeep are your main costs. You also have to advertise and retain business. The market is so flooded with guys that simply cut grass. Being a landscape contractor is probably the best route. But with that you need proper licensure and insurance coverage. Hell you technically aren’t allowed to do anything aside from cut grass unless you have a landscape horticultural license on file with the state.
It’s gonna start slow for just yards. The money is in commercial Maintenance contracts

I am retired from the military and do real estate appraisals.
I have also owned 2 very small businesses for about 10 years, one of which is a lawn business. I don't put any real time in them to grow them anymore. I mainly hold on to the at this point for tax purposes.
Find out what type of lawns you are targeting. Small, large, commercial, etc. If I were to start one today, I would buy a 52" stander, a good backpack blower and a trimmer.
