My dad retired from the Marines in 1974. He passed away last year. World War II Korea and Vietnam veteran.

My father was in the Corps 68-71 (0311, 1/5). He made sure I had a guaranteed East Coast in my contract. All Louisiana Marines went to San Diego in the early 90’s.

I think you’re confusing “ex” and “former”. There are no ex-Marines. Former Marine is a term generally used to describe a Marine no longer on active duty. That being said, we typically just use “Marine” in conversation. When describing someone and their past, there needs to be a way to signify they are not on active duty, hence former Marine.

For example; “Mr. salty1 beat the ever-loving shite out of and curb-stomped Mr. Terd Ferguson today at the local Sonic. Mr. salty1 is a former Marine.”

Without the “former”, the reader would infer salty1 was still on active duty.

“Once a Marine, Always a Marine” is entirely correct though.
