I bought a stainless submariner when they were around $500 bucks at the base PX (late 1970s). After paying to have it serviced a few times I decided it was a waste of money tossed it in a drawer, and got a Seiko. My kids can fight over the Submariner when I'm gone.

Quite a few Rolex watches were bought in the PX and worn in Vietnam. I have had a few over the years that had amazing stories attached to them. That era was when Rolex was just a really good robust sports watch.

That Planet Ocean has the rubber in the bezel (orange) that I mentioned earlier. How long it looks good is still up for debate. You can always change the bezel but it ain't cheap.

A Rolex factory service (without the need for parts) is going to run about $700-800 currently. That said modern Rolex service (~1980 forward) can be found in most decent sized cities for closer to $300. You need to investigate who is good in your area.

Ask 10 watch guys about service intervals and you will get 11 answers. Rolex used to say 3 years for service intervals, now 5 (movements built 2013-) they also relate the average time consumers use is 10 years. While my personal recommendation varies based on the particular movement/company 6-7 years isn't an issue for a newer Rolex movement in my mind. There are some movements I wouldn't go that long on but they are generally more complicated/expensive movements.

I will give you $5000 for it. You want to sell it?

I wear the omega every day...I'd fist-frick an Amsterdam stage show whore with it and not give 2 fricks...

I have an 88 dark green Rolex that is a touch weightier...so I don't wear it doing active shite

Great article.

My role model in life and my hero, my father, is a highly successful man of wealth who came up from poverty and to this day he drives a pickup truck. He could afford to spend $200k on a personal vehicle, but he drives a Ford Pickup.

He could care less about impressing others with a wristwatch. He's all about others, never about himself.

If you are suggesting they aren't tough (at least in comparison to other mechanical watches) you are mistaken. While I can think of a couple of brands that have arguably better shock protection (at least more novel) Rolex makes a watch you can abuse daily, though most people don't.

The current watches are better built than those of the 60s/70s. The bracelets don't stretch and rattle, they keep much better time, the dials don't turn brown, spider web or star dust when exposed to UV light (though good examples of those are highly collectible now), the movements are more shock resistant and the cases are much better built. I won't argue the price hasn't far outstripped the increases in quality but a 116610 Sub is a FAR better watch than the 5512/5513 of the Vietnam era.

If you keep your eye on Tourneau or Bob's you can catch one for sale just a bit more than that for a 90-91 or mid 00s...

If you are ex mil they'll cut you a deal...

This offer is only for a late 70’s like he said he has. Not interested in 90’s models but thanks.

Fortunately I don't need the money at least not right now, and like the other poster pointed out these watches often have some personal history attached to them. Looking at something like an old watch you have had forever can transport you in time back to places you were, and things you were doing.

Bill Gates, Jack Bogle and Steve Jobs are just three of the billionaires that wear (wore) watches that cost less than $20. Everyone has their own set of priorities.

I honestly buy watches for myself. Most people also don't notice what is on your wrist, if they do and judge you for it they are shallow and I could not care less about their opinion. Also, people notice and comment on bright colored watches, the few comments I get are usually about a watch or strap with orange or something big and bold like a Panerai Submersible on a blue polished stingray strap. Throw a bright colored strap (especially a NATO) on a cheap watch and people will notice. I could wear my Patek 5070 for a year straight and not a single person would notice unless I was around other watch geeks. Now a yellow gold Day/Date or a rose gold 47mm Panerai might draw some unwanted attention.

FYI you should let your kids see you wear it, at least on occasion. A watch that connects someone to a time and place is more valuable (to them) than a watch dad or grampa kept in a drawer. My father never had a lot of money but did have a decent gold filled Hamilton, but he rarely if ever wore it, the watch I treasure most is the watch I bought him one father's day at K-mart (back when K-mart sold mechanical watches) and he wore it for several years even though it kept crappy time and you couldn't regulate it. It wasn't that I bought it for him either it is that I remember him wearing it during a lot of special times in my life as a kid.

Could you at least post a picture of it? I like looking at old matte dialed 1680’s and 5513’s.

I want a stardust dial/ghost bezel in the worst way.

This 5513 is even a Bart Simpson.

Note I question the authenticity of the watch since it is basically too good to be true.

Please share any advantage you feel any Rolex has over a sub $200 Seiko SKX other than cachet.
