Always love a good success story.

His grandfather started the family business in 1912 after saving money from his factory job

quote:

There’s a good chance that when you think of pickles, you think of a blue-and-green jar of Vlasic kosher dills.

Started by Croatian immigrant Joseph Vlasic, the Vlasic brand was handed down to his son, Robert, in 1963.

It was a smart growth play: By 1974, per capita US pickle consumption hit eight pounds, up 4x from the 1930s.

Under Robert’s leadership, Vlasic expanded to 96 kinds of pickles, peppers, relishes, and sauerkrauts.

“The original meme king”

quote:

The original meme king
“We decided we didn’t want to take ourselves or our business too seriously,” Vlasic told The New York Times in 1974.

In practice, according to Vlasic, that meant spending more on marketing than the rest of the pickle industry combined.

Over the years, Vlasic gathered pickle jokes — ones like, “Why did the pickle close its eyes? It saw the salad dressing” — which he eventually made into a book. “There’s nothing very serious about a pickle,” Vlasic once said.

Damn, eight pounds of pickles seems like a bunch. Don’t think we’re near that anymore.

Yep.

Although, to make it to age 96, Mr. Vlasic was very well preserved.

Vlasic never had to worry about Aunt Bea's pickles ruining his business.

It probably plateaued if anything. Pickles as a proportion of the daily diet can only go up so far.

I’m thankful he lived a good life and passed on peacefully before he had to witness what people like you have done to this once great nation.

I only buy $20 pickle jars from farmers markets and artisan exhibits. Things like pickled okra, quail eggs, watermelon rinds too. There is more to pickle life than Corporate Cucumbers. Become a pickle hipster

Proof that an inferior product can saturate the market with good marketing and distribution strategy.

Hats off to that guy, really. Because his pickles are pretty blah.

Del Dixie/Best Maid, for instance, is a much stronger and better tasting pickle made in Texas, and there’s hardly room for it in store shelves in Louisiana because Vlasic and Mount Olive have the market cornered. Those two brands have killed regional variation on that product.
